Tensile sail at Pig on the Beach

Bespoke Tensile sail rain and shade solution completes the Alfresco scene at The Pig on the Beach Hotel.

Further to contact from PSE Associates, a Project Management group from Brighton we met along with the refurbishment Architect at the Pig on the Beach Hotel , Studland, Dorset. The Hotel known previously as Manor House Hotel was in the process of a major renovation by Limewood Hotel Group which specialises in a luxury country laid back ambience (our description !)

The remit was to design and instal a bespoke tensile sail to provide all weather seasonal cover ( April – October) over the Pizza Oven & Bar area. The Pizza bar was wrapped around the dry stone wall which encloses a market garden used by the Hotel for fresh produce. The pizza oven was built as an extension of the dry stone wall.

We submitted our tensile sail design based on our “Schooner” concept of varnished laminated timber masts combined with spars and tensioned cables to absorb the sail tension forces. Timbers & sail connected to the frame with bespoke mirror polished stainless steel fittings. Sail tensioning through 4:1 pulley system using Harken blocks. Serge Ferrari 502 precontraint sail CAD cut and fabricated by SD Sails .

The tensile sail result blends into the scenery, the Pizza Chefs and Guests fully protected from the elements.

We provide our Winterisation service, annual sail clean, autumn & spring rig, frame check and polish.

Client Comments

The sail was designed and built during our very busy refurbishment , and we are delighted with the result. Staff, management and especially our customers love the ambiance under the Schooner Sail. The Wood-fired Pizza Oven and Bar facilities are very popular and extend our hospitality areas during the Spring & Summer seasons.
